Jan Allen | Counsellor
My passion is assisting people to recover from the effects of trauma and to find a life that is free from distressing symptoms. I am a trauma survivor myself and everything I learned on my journey has helped to make my life more meaningful and joyful. I want to help others find their meaning and their joy.
I come from Gisborne and have lived many years overseas in a variety of cultures, which has helped to give me a broad perspective on life.

Counselling / Therapy Approach
My speciality focus is trauma, utilising a combination of models, including Internal Family Systems (a mindfulness-based approach), Hakomi Somatic (mind/body) Psychotherapy (both especially effective for trauma) Narrative, CBT, and Te Whare Tapa Wha. I come from a client-centred, strengths-based approach, which means that the client is the expert on their lives, and I respect their right to decide what is best for them. It also means we focus at times on the client’s strengths rather than just on what isn’t working in their lives.
I have worked for over 7 years, mainly with survivors of sexual harm and other traumas. I believe in a holistic approach and have attended many trainings that support the understanding of neuroscience, and how our experiences, and our nervous system, together, greatly impact the quality of our lives. I believe in empowering clients with an understanding of how their experiences have impacted them and how they can heal those wounds.
