Ataya Kanji | Psychotherapist

As a therapist, I have the privilege of slowly contradicting and undoing the expectation that there is nowhere for a client’s pain and suffering to come home to.

I seek to meet my clients where they are, sensitively feeling into what it might be like to be you, with respect, openness and warmth.

Counselling / Therapy Services

With a particular interest in guiding individuals through the intimate process of working through emotional pain and early relational trauma, I seek to work with clients to expand the relationship with self and other – to cultivate a capacity for self-friendliness, emotional regulation and inner gentleness, and explore experiences of shame, guilt, self-doubt and self-criticism.

Counselling / Therapy Approach

Psychodynamically trained, my approach is influenced by theories of attachment, intergenerational trauma, internal family systems, polyvagal theory and other approaches to trauma healing. Of Indian descent but born in Aotearoa New Zealand, I am committed to discussions around cultural and ethnic identity, oppression, power and intersectionality.
